Peace Eye: a fictional magazine printed on a Riso

Peace Eye, made in 2025 by the Los Angeles-based artist Bijou Karman, is a Riso-printed publication that imitates a magazine that never existed. Collage, film photography and original drawings share the same pages, and Karman describes it as following one woman's psychedelic and sexual awakening as she breaks free of patriarchal constraints.

Its references run wide: 1960s underground newspapers, 1970s feminist publications, punk posters, vintage men's magazines and old yoga books, alongside Robert Crumb, Grateful Dead iconography and the cover of the Beatles' Revolver. Some source material came from LA thrift stores and estate sales, some from her late grandfather's belongings. Riso suits the job for technical reasons: inks misregister slightly, the palette stays limited, and paper texture survives on the surface, so the process generates period flaws rather than simulating them. What separates this from the usual nostalgic pastiche is where the material comes from — images cut out of old magazines, turned against the gaze that produced them.
