Izmir's photographic history on view until 13 December
İzmir Fotoğrafhanesi: The Construction of Visual Memory (1840-1922) runs at APİKAM in Izmir until 13 December 2026, curated by Aybala Yentürk.
The exhibition İzmir Fotoğrafhanesi: The Construction of Visual Memory (1840-1922) opened on 11 December 2025 at the Ahmet Piriştina City Archive and Museum in Izmir and stays up until 13 December 2026. It is curated by Aybala Yentürk, with Dr Serhan Kemal Saygı as project coordinator. Opening hours are 09:00-17:00 on weekdays and 10:00-17:00 at weekends, closed Mondays.
The show covers the first eight decades of photographic production in the city, when Izmir's studios clustered in the Frankish, Greek and Armenian quarters — meaning the visual record of a port city was produced along a commercial geography that mirrored its population map. Hundreds of photographs are drawn largely from private holdings and family archives, including the collections of Mert Rüstem, Nejat Yentürk, Ercüment Tahtakıran, Yavuz Çorapçıoğlu, Nazmi Şurgun and Ömer Koç. The 1922 end date marks the fire and the population exchange that cut the period short.
