212 Photography Istanbul Returns for a Ninth Edition

212 Photography Istanbul announced its ninth edition on 20 July 2026. From 26 September to 11 October the festival spreads across more than a dozen venues, among them Tophane-i Amire, the Galata Greek School, the historic post office building, Saint Benoit Church and Pera Museum. The programme marks 200 years of photography and includes work by Martin Parr, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Jill Greenberg and Omar Victor Diop. An international contest with a 5,000 euro prize closes on 6 September.

The venue list is the point. Istanbul has no permanent museum of photography, so the festival assembles one temporarily out of borrowed buildings, linked by a single pass. Two shows stand out: the first Istanbul presentation of Brazilian modernist photography, and a survey of contemporary Nordic work, both pulling away from the usual Western European axis. Whether sixteen days can hold a dozen sites together is the open question; spreading across a city often costs a festival its depth.
