Sam Wenc Draws Album Covers by Hand for Indie Music

Sam Wenc's practice is simply described: album covers made by hand for independent music. Drawing, print and physical material sit awkwardly against the visual grammar of streaming, where a cover first appears as a small tile on a phone. That format has quietly shaped design for years, pushing covers towards high contrast, large type and centred composition, because those survive at thumbnail size.

Hand-made work loses that contest by definition. Detail disappears, texture flattens in the scan, and the labour is only partly legible on screen. But in independent music the cover has a second life. Cassette and vinyl sales have returned as a real income line for small artists, which makes the sleeve a product again — seen on a merch table after a show rather than in a playlist. Wenc treats the cover as part of the release, not its packaging, and accepts what that costs in reach.
