Seventy-six schemes for Bodrum's historic windmill headland
An ideas competition for Gümbet's Değirmenburnu drew 78 entries, of which 76 were judged. The jury issued three equal prizes and five commendations.
The ideas competition for the historic windmills at Değirmenburnu and their surroundings, run jointly by Bodrum Municipality and the Bodrum branch of the Chamber of Architects, has concluded. Of 78 entries, 76 were assessed by the jury between 8 and 12 July 2026, with the exhibition and colloquium held in Bodrum on 1 August 2026.
A seven-member jury chaired by the urban planner Zeynep Ş. Enlil awarded three equal prizes, five equal commendations and two purchases. The equal prizes went to teams led by Zeynep Altınbaşlı, M. Batu Kepekçioğlu and Sacit Arda Karaatlı, with teams ranging from two to eleven members drawn from architecture, landscape architecture, planning and engineering. Değirmenburnu is one of the few remaining open stretches on a coastline under heavy tourism pressure, and its windmills survive as markers of the peninsula's agricultural past. The harder question is whether an ideas competition can translate into planning decisions.
