Christine Sun Kim covers a Seoul museum in sign language
At MMCA Seoul, the artist turns American Sign Language movements into floor-to-wall graphics and an animation on a curved screen of 72 panels.
Christine Sun Kim's new commission occupies the Seoul Box at MMCA Seoul as the second edition of the MMCA × LG OLED Series, launched in 2025 with support from LG Electronics. Forms derived from American Sign Language movements are laid across walls and floor in black vinyl and paint, while an animation plays on a curved OLED screen measuring 8.1 by 5.4 metres and built from 72 fifty-five-inch panels.
Kim, a Korean American artist based in Berlin, has spent years making sound visible and describing how a Deaf person navigates a world organised around hearing; a survey at the Whitney Museum followed in 2025. Speaking to the Korea Herald in July 2026, she explained her black-and-white palette by noting that the world is not designed for her. Corporate screen commissions usually let the hardware dominate. Here the screen is one surface among several, and the grammar of sign language, direction and duration, sets the composition.
