San Francisco's SF Camerawork closes after 52 years

SF Camerawork, a nonprofit gallery dedicated to contemporary photography in San Francisco, closed its doors on August 16. The gallery had announced the decision on August 10.

In a statement to The San Francisco Standard, SF Camerawork cited years of rising operational costs, a decline in public funding, and a changing philanthropic landscape. "Despite the determined efforts of our staff, Board, artists, donors, and supporters to secure a sustainable future, we have reached the difficult conclusion that we can no longer continue operations," the statement read.

Founded in 1974 by a group of artists and located at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, SF Camerawork became one of the city's most prized venues for fine art photography, serving as a launchpad for artists including Robert Mapplethorpe and Sally Mann before they achieved international fame.

In February 2024, the gallery was designated a legacy business by the city's Small Business Commission. In 2020, work by several of its founders appeared in a group show at SFMOMA.

The closure follows a wave of gallery shutdowns in San Francisco. Since June 2025, at least five major galleries — including KADIST, Rena Bransten Gallery, Altman Siegel Gallery and Jack Fischer Gallery — have closed, many citing financial struggles.
