Sharjah Biennial 17 to open in January 2027 with 109 participants
Titled "What remains, sits restive," the biennial pairs curators Angela Harutyunyan and Paula Nascimento across multiple venues in the emirate of Sharjah.
Sharjah Art Foundation has announced the title, curatorial framework and participant list for the 17th edition of Sharjah Biennial. Titled "What remains, sits restive," the biennial will take place from 21 January to 13 June 2027 across multiple venues in the emirate of Sharjah, with an opening week from 21 to 24 January 2027.
The biennial convenes 109 participants. Curator Angela Harutyunyan traces the afterlives of socialist modernity as observed from the peripheries of modernisation and anti-colonial struggles, bringing together 55 participants around this inquiry.
Curator Paula Nascimento uses infrastructure as a method to explore how space, place and memory intersect, inviting 54 participants to propose new vocabularies for navigating the present moment.
The exhibition's shared premise holds that unfinished projects of modernity and emancipation do not simply disappear, but continue to shape the politics of time and space in the present.
The previous edition, "to carry," ran from February to June 2025 with more than 140 participants. Information and registration for the new edition are available by email through Sharjah Art Foundation's official biennial page.
