Material, Labour and Reuse on Show in Maslak

Encounters Vol. 2: The Art of Frugal Hedonism is a multidisciplinary exhibition organised around material, labour and transformation. Rather than grouping work by medium, it asks a question about making: what an object is made from, whose labour produced it, and what happens to it once used. The subtitle ties that question to a wider argument about how much is enough.

Multidisciplinary shows risk dispersal, since work from different media can end up demonstrating only variety. Here the connective tissue is process, which pushes the distinction between art and design into the background. The subject also has a practical basis: production costs, access to material and the handling of waste are part of daily studio conditions, and treating sustainability through material rather than slogan returns it to the workshop.
