Osman Hamdi Bey, Read Against Orientalism

Pera Müzesi has brought together its Osman Hamdi Bey holdings in a presentation that places the painter inside the Orientalism debate rather than simply celebrating him. The move works on the museum's own collection: set beside its well known group of Orientalist paintings, the images made by an Ottoman painter raise the question of who is looking at whom, and on whose terms.

Osman Hamdi Bey has been explained through two competing frames, as a painter who inverted Western clichés from the inside, and as one who adopted and reproduced the same visual language. The exhibition keeps both in view instead of settling the argument, and his parallel career as archaeologist, museum director and bureaucrat makes the objects inside his paintings a subject in their own right. The show opened on 12 June 2026 and runs until 28 February 2027 in Tepebaşı. Read the wall texts and walk the Orientalist collection on the other floors; the comparison is the point.
