Pitti Filati's Research Area Chose Discipline: Spazio Ricerca 2027/28
The Florence yarn fair's research area built its Autumn/Winter 2027-28 knitwear direction on equestrian disciplines. Its curators put the tension between order and freedom at the centre.
The Spazio Ricerca staged at the 99th edition of Pitti Immagine Filati rested its Autumn/Winter 2027-2028 knitwear direction on a single concept: discipline. The fair's own text explains the concept through a tension it considers decisive for the present moment, the tension between order and freedom.
As in previous seasons, the research area was curated by Angelo Figus, Carrie Hollands and Manuela Sandroni, with exhibition design by Alessandro Moradei. The text accompanying the concept proposes reading discipline as an instrument rather than a restriction: “It is not a restriction, but a tool of conscious freedom.”
The direction splits into three sub-themes, each named after an equestrian discipline. Dressage carries the formal elegance of European riding into knitwear through vertical braided designs and refined surfaces. Reining draws on Western atmospheres and American Quarter Horse patterning, gathering quilted geometric motifs, denim, suede, flannel and wool. Obstacle opens onto an athletic, vibrant sportswear language of colour blocking and technical fibres.
The research area's text carries no byline. The fair does not attribute the concept to any single executive; the reading is presented as the joint work of the three curators.
The 99th edition ran at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence from 24 to 26 June 2026 with 119 exhibiting companies. The same edition hosted the Master edition of Feel the Contest 2026, the exhibition ArteMonium, Il filo di Arianna. La materia oltre la forma with thirty-four paintings by Irene Pietrobono, and the 46th Vintage Selection.
