Pantone Chose a White for the First Time: Cloud Dancer

Pantone named PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer its Color of the Year 2026. The announcement was made on 4 December 2025. It is the first time a white has taken the title in the institute's history.

The reasoning looks somewhere other than the usual colour narrative. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, describes the colour this way: “Cloud Dancer enhances our focus, providing release from the distraction of external influences.” The institute's own page description calls it a lofty white that serves as a calming influence.

The choice is therefore not a palette proposal but a proposal about attention. Rather than steering a season of saturated colour, it proposes changing the background of everything: a white ground is a ground that makes whatever sits on it speak louder.

On the fabric side this means serious work. White is among the hardest colours to produce: batch variation, yellowing, the shifting of optical brighteners in the wash and warmth differences originating in the fibre cannot be hidden in a white cloth. When a season's colour is white, the issue stops being dye and becomes consistency.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, also appears in the announcement.

Reading Pantone's selection method from the institute's own site was not possible this time: the Color of the Year page and the article explaining the method are JavaScript-rendered pages whose content would not open, and the press release contains no sentence describing the selection process. No claim about the method is made here for that reason.

Pantone's copyright notice stands plainly at the end of the announcement: the content belongs to Pantone LLC.
