Milano Unica Called Hand Skill Punk, and Named Its AW 2027/28 Palettes
The Italian fabric fair built its Autumn-Winter 2027/28 direction between craft and punk, and published eighteen colours by name across three families. Artistic director Stefano Fadda reads manual labour as a gesture of refusal.
Milano Unica announced its Autumn-Winter 2027/28 direction under a single declarative title: MU IS PUNK! HANDCRAFT IS PUNK! By the fair's own account the concept sets artisan technique and manual labour alongside smart technology, aiming at goods that cannot be repeated. Punk here is not a genre but a sign of detachment from mainstream conformity.
The concept's voice is the fair's artistic director, Stefano Fadda. In the release published in March 2026 he sums the direction up in one line: “We need to reconnect with the manual skills that make us unique.”
The direction splits into three sub-themes, each bringing its own colour family. Under MU IS PUNK /CLASSIC! sit Taupe, Burnt Burgundy, Chestnut Brown, Chalk White, Charcoal Black and Oxidised Silver, a family in which warm neutrals are balanced by burgundy accents and classic fabric heritage is reworked with innovative finishes.
MU IS PUNK /FREESTYLE! is louder: Lustrous Brown, Electric Blue, Vermilion Red, Resin Green, Neon Fuchsia, Glacier White. The fair describes this heading as the place where sporty fabrics meet a fashion-forward attitude.
MU IS PUNK /ROMANCE! opens onto tactile, three-dimensional materials: Dark Green, Tobacco Brown, Brick Red, Rosy Greige, Faded Bronze, Rust. In the materials release of July 2026 this heading is described through rich surfaces, greens and yellows.
Across the headings the materials named include denim, wool, cashmere, velvet, jersey, knits, fleece, lace, macramé and technical fabrics, with lacquered, flocked and embroidered finishes brought forward. In the General Collection, traditional wool fabrics are balanced against high-performance technical materials.
The direction was announced ahead of the fair's 43rd edition at Fiera Milano and extended on the materials side during the edition itself. The same edition hosted The Radical Elegance, dedicated to the fashion photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri, the AquiLANA project, and The Cube Archive: Punk is all around.
