China's Slowdown Reaches the Camera Business

Second-quarter statements from the camera makers all point the same way: China is contracting. Sony reported that the imaging market remained stable in every region except China, which continued to show negative year-on-year growth. Nikon revised its sales projection down by 300,000 units, citing demand contraction mainly in China. CIPA figures show shipments of cameras and lenses to China fell in the first half of 2026, and North America has resumed its place as the main driver of sales.

The causes sit outside photography. Housing costs and living expenses have risen while wages stalled, the stock market failed to hold its late-2024 gains, youth unemployment runs near 15 percent and the overall rate near 5 percent. A camera is a deferrable purchase. The consequences land in production: fewer new models and smaller technical steps as manufacturers cut costs, with memory demand from AI data centres squeezing the same component supply. For photographers, the practical answer is to keep existing gear longer.
