A Pop Portrait Enters a National Collection

The National Portrait Gallery in London has acquired a 2024 portrait of Charli xcx by the photographer and director Harley Weir. The singer leans against a wall in a white crop top and black jeans. The work hangs in the History Makers space in Room 33, a display devoted to figures who have shaped contemporary culture and public life. The acquisition was funded through the Bukhman Foundation's Collecting the Now initiative, which put one million pounds towards contemporary acquisitions.

What a museum collects defines who it treats as a historical subject, and the job once done by painted portraiture now largely belongs to music and fashion photography. Collecting the Now is built on not waiting for a career to close before buying. The risk is obvious: cultural weight measured today may read differently in a decade. The gain is practical, since retrospective acquisition costs more and period prints become harder to find once a moment has passed.
