Before the Mobiles, Calder Ran a Wire Circus

Alexander Calder is remembered for mobiles, but the work began much smaller, in a Paris studio in the 1920s. He built a miniature circus from wire, cork, cloth and thread, then performed it himself for invited audiences, moving acrobats and animals with his hands through sessions that could run for hours.

The figures matter less than what he did with them. A wire figure at rest is a drawing; set in motion it acquires volume, and the circus functioned as a long experiment in how movement produces form from rigid material. The mobiles are the same test without the operator, with air currents replacing the pulling hand. What kept any of this legible is the record. The objects survive in a museum and look like a pile of components; the photographs and film of Calder working them are what carry the piece — the standing problem with time-based work, where the thing is preserved and the event lives only as its documentation.
