Aperture Opens New Permanent Home on Manhattan's Upper West Side

Aperture, the photography magazine and publishing house founded in 1952 by a group of writers and photographers including Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, opened the doors to its new permanent home on Friday, September 18, 2026. According to the organization's press release, the building sits at 380 Columbus Avenue at 78th Street on Manhattan's Upper West Side, positioned directly across the street from the American Museum of Natural History.

The opening coincided with the debut of "Aperture Loves New York," an inaugural exhibition drawn from the organization's own collection. Aperture's announcement lists featured artists including Diane Arbus, Tina Barney, Dawoud Bey, Awol Erizku, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander and Nan Goldin. A report from West Side Rag noted that the show pairs photographs from Aperture's archive with books by several of these same photographers.

The new headquarters replaces the organization's Chelsea gallery and bookstore, which had remained closed since 2018. West Side Rag's coverage traced the organization's history back to its 1952 founding by writers and photographers, Adams and Lange among them, framing the Upper West Side opening as the end of an eight-year gap without a permanent public space.

Executive director Sarah Meister emphasized accessibility when describing the new building to West Side Rag. "The idea is, it's a welcoming space. It's free and open to the public," Meister said, underscoring that the venue was conceived less as a private gallery than as a communal gathering point for people interested in photography.

Aperture first announced the September 2026 opening date back in June of that year. Local coverage published on the day of the opening described the event as marking a new chapter for the organization, following years of operating without a dedicated physical headquarters in New York City.
