Cinematography Between Open Sky and One Room
The August 2026 issue of American Cinematographer sets a UFO thriller beside a wartime drama shot almost entirely in a single location.
American Cinematographer announced its August 2026 issue on 24 July. One feature covers Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's UFO thriller, with cinematographer Janusz Kaminski discussing the process of discovery that shaped his visual approach. Another covers Pressure, Anthony Maras's Second World War drama, in which Jamie D. Ramsay explains how he built visual variety inside a story confined largely to one location. The issue also profiles nine emerging cinematographers in Rising Stars of Cinematography 2026.
A lighting section includes diagrams from Wuthering Heights, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Amrum, The Pitt and Rooster, plus a reflection by Michael Goi on illuminating character rather than merely a set. The issue closes with a return to The Sugarland Express from 1973, shot by Vilmos Zsigmond. Placing a fifty-year-old production beside current work shows how much of the craft has changed its tools and how little the underlying question has moved: what light does to a face.
