The Economics of Photography Open Calls
PhMuseum's August 2026 list of six open calls puts entry fees of 10 to 53 euros next to prizes running from 1,800 euros to 10,000 dollars.
PhMuseum published its August 2026 guide to awards and open calls on 30 July. It lists the Paris Photo-Aperture PhotoBook Awards (deadline 5 September, entry 26 to 53 euros, 10,000 dollars for First PhotoBook), the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant (1 September, free, 10,000 pounds), the Preus Museum open call (15 August, 10 euros, waived for students and Norwegian photographers), Copenhagen Photo Festival 2027 (1 September, 29 euros), the Marco Pesaresi Award (17 August, free, 5,000 euros) and the OD Photo Prize (12 August, 20 euros).
Set side by side, the numbers describe a system. Copenhagen charges 29 euros and pays a selected solo exhibitor 537 euros, meaning roughly eighteen entry fees cover one artist fee. Free calls tend to be underwritten by a publication or a foundation; paid ones are financed largely by the applicants themselves. For a photographer without a gallery or publisher these calls remain the only door, which is exactly why the missing numbers matter: almost none disclose how many entries arrive, or where the fees go.
