Fifty Artists, One Subject: The Ark at Powerhouse Arts

The Ark at Powerhouse Arts gathers animal sculptures by more than 50 artists. Single-subject group shows usually treat the theme as a pretext; here it functions as a test. When fifty hands approach the same subject, the differences between them register through material and scale rather than style. Making a hare in bronze, felt, scrap metal or paper amounts to four separate decisions, and side by side those decisions become legible.

The animal is among the oldest subjects in sculpture and one of the easiest to lose to sentimentality, which is part of why contemporary art has largely handled it as symbol or as ecological argument. The venue matters too: Powerhouse Arts runs open production workshops, with casting, ceramics, metal and print under one roof, which shortens the distance between how a work was made and how it is shown. At this scale, curating becomes a question of placement rather than selection.
