The team reports four practical outcomes from that choice. The surface cleans itself, tears partly close on their own, the material takes colour, and ultraviolet protection can be added. A prototype dress renews itself when fed with a nutrient solution.

What shifts here is not fibre technology but the definition of garment care. Washing, dry cleaning and mending are all things done to a piece of clothing from outside. A living fabric asks for something closer to feeding, which turns ownership into maintenance of an organism. The limits are equally clear: repair is partial, and behaviour under uncontrolled humidity and heat has not been tested against the standards the industry uses. The past decade of fungal materials suggests the hard part comes after the prototype.
