A 300-Kilogram Steel Totem Enters Bofill's La Fábrica

Luna Paiva has placed a 300-kilogram stainless steel totem at La Fábrica, the office and home Ricardo Bofill built in the 1970s inside an abandoned cement factory near Barcelona. Silos, concrete volumes and leftover industrial bodies were kept rather than demolished and left to be softened by planting, making the complex one of the earliest and best-known arguments for reusing industrial heritage.

Installing work in a place like this is not the same as installing it in a gallery. The site already carries a strong formal language of concrete mass and repeated vertical openings. Paiva's choice is to separate by material rather than compete: stainless steel reflects where concrete absorbs, and returns the light and the surroundings. Weight is the common ground. The totem form belongs to the same family as the silos and chimneys around it, adding to the rhythm of the site instead of interrupting it, which is the harder and longer-lasting of the two options available to sculpture in such a setting.
