The Last Wood Column Shop in New York Shuts Down

American Wood Column Corporation, the last maker of wooden columns in New York, has closed after 110 years in business. Joshua Charrow recorded the final days of the shop and the roughly 6,000 patterns stacked on its shelves. Each one was made by hand for a specific order, for a specific detail on a specific building. The inventory is, in effect, a parts list for a century of the city's construction.

The loss is easy to file under nostalgia and harder to read as a technical problem. Museums collect objects; they rarely collect tooling. Yet a pattern holds what an object cannot: which dimension was solved with which profile, how a given detail was cut. When a shop like this closes, the product does not disappear, the ability to make it again does. From that point on, repairing a damaged column stops being restoration and becomes approximation from photographs.
