Onassis ONX rethinks how technology-based art gets commissioned
ONX Relay combines funding, curatorial guidance and technical support, aiming to place tech-based works in institutions from the outset.
Onassis ONX, the Onassis Foundation's platform for art and advanced technologies, has announced ONX Relay, a commissioning and distribution programme that folds curatorial guidance, production resources and technical expertise into project funding. The stated aim is to plan the placement of technology-based works in museums, institutions and biennials from the start. Ocula reported the announcement from Athens on 5 August 2026.
Three artists have been selected: Trevor Paglen with Neural Images, an installation with AI-generated paintings; Maya Man with Dreams Come True, a multichannel video on K-pop and AI; and Ben Frost with Prometheus, using video and spatial sound. The programme runs for roughly a year, with a curators' preview in spring 2027. Afroditi Panagiotakou, the foundation's artistic director, frames it around time and space to experiment. The real bottleneck in new media art is not money but afterlife: who stores the work, who shows it, and with what documentation.
